Why does reconfiguration of Intel® Stratix® 10 devices fail in Active Serial (AS) mode if you reset the serial flash device before toggling nCONFIG?

Environment

  • Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT

    Critical Issue

    Description

Reconfiguration of Intel® Stratix® 10 devices in Active Serial (AS) mode may fail if a system asserts the external reset of the serial flash device used for configuration before reconfiguration is triggered

This is because the Secure Device Manager (SDM) sets initialization values in the serial flash device during the first configuration of the Intel Stratix 10 device but doesn’t set them again during reconfiguration.

Hence, if the serial flash device is reset before reconfiguration, the initialization values are eliminated causing reconfiguration to fail.

    Resolution

To work around this problem, do not reset the serial flash device prior to a reconfiguration.

You can also work around this problem using the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version 19.3 and downloading and installing patch 0.45fw from the links below.

You must install the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition software version 19.3 software before installing this patch:

Download the version 19.3 patch 0.45fw for Linux (.run)

Download the version 19.3 patch 0.45fw for Window (.exe)

Download the Readme for the version 19.3 patch 0.45fw (.txt)

This problem is fixed starting with the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version 20.1.
