Troubleshooting for System Hangs, Unexpected Shut Down, or Blue Screens (BSOD) on Intel® NUC Devices

Summary

Troubleshooting steps for NUCs that randomly turn off or freeze.

Description
  • System turns off or locks up
  • Blue screen errors (BSOD) 
  • Can happen:
    • during startup
    • while system is on and in sleep mode
    • while software applications or web browsers are open
    • while playing games
    • when new I/O device was plugged in ex. USB mouse, 3.5mm audio jack
Resolution

Troubleshooting recommendations:
 

Check the power adapterVerify that the power adapter works. Test with a different power adapter if one is available. If a different adapter works, contact Intel Customer Support.
Check memory modules
  • Remove and reinstall the memory modules
  • If two memory modules are installed, try one at a time.
  • Try moving the memory module from one slot to the other.
  • Try different memory modules you know to be good.
  • If possible, use memory models listed on the compatible components page.
Check the drive
  • Remove and reinstall the storage drive
  • Test the drive on a different system, if available.
  • Try a different drive.
Check for thermal issuesCheck if the Intel® NUC shows signs of overheating.
Check the Network Boot setting in BIOS

If Network Boot is enabled in BIOS, random restarts or blue screen errors can occur. 

  1. Press F2 during start to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Go to Advanced > Boot > Boot Configuration.
  3. Disable Network Boot - OR - enable Boot Network Devices Last.
  4. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS.
Update BIOS, drivers, and firmwareDownload and install all the latest BIOS, drivers, and firmware.
 
BIOS recoveryTry a BIOS Recovery.
For issues during gameplayIf playing games, check for a corrupted configuration file for the game.
