The Person Behind the Wheel, Driving Intel’s Strategy to Empower 24 Million Developers

Developers, the “Superheroes” of the PC Ecosystem:

  • Intel’s developer-first strategy elevates software, empowers developers across Intel’s PC portfolio and creates new open-source tools and ecosystem collaborations.

  • Today, more than 24 million developers are innovating, driving the ecosystem forward but many are missing out the opportunities created through harnessing the value of Intel silicon.

  • Intel has the right tools and support to help developers unleash the power of hardware, reduce time-to-market and costs, and create the best PC experiences. We are working to make these tools open, easy-to-use, and automatically integrated or available in the places that developers already go for resources.

Empowering 24 Million Developers to Unleash Intel Silicon

With years of experience and a reputation as a “trick problem-solver”, Melissa Evers, Intel’s general manager of Software to Execution, alongside over a hundred employees across several Intel teams, set out to help solve a new challenge. Evers and her team were chartered with creating and leading Intel’s developer-first strategy to elevate software, engage developers and unleash the power of Intel’s hardware for a new era of distributed intelligence. She partnered with teams across the corporation to build strategies then execute tactics aligned to our intent to engage authentically, meet developers where they are and aid in helping developers get stuff done.

There are more than 24 million developers in the world, constantly creating new experiences—all built on top of an increasingly sophisticated set of micro-services, progressive web apps, open-source tools and cloud-native applications.

The big question: how does Intel and its OEM partners ensure developers understand and can utilize the full value of the hardware underneath?

This fundamental shift in mindset and focus is a core focus of Intel’s developer-first strategy. Evers knows it’s one of the team’s most daunting jobs yet —and the most important. “The challenges are massive. That’s why I love it. You have the chance to change the course of history.”

Every Developer, Every Experience

Intel’s strategy is to create a holistic set of assets that reach every developer, regardless of where they sit in the stack or the value chain. We have to understand their goals, then deliver real value to them from the hardware, especially through open-source tools and ecosystem collaborations. This means a range of new capabilities and collaborations are coming to help developers reduce costs, speed time-to-market and deliver better PC experiences.

The work has already begun. Intel’s teams are partnering with OSVs and ISVs to offload AI capabilities like camera auto-focus and auto-populate to run natively on the platform, improving speed and performance. Others are defining and executing Intel’s cloud-client vision, creating new standards for APIs for neural networking and building solutions that will enable Windows 11 to run Android apps in a virtual machine on top of the OS.

Intel is also stepping up events like Intel® Innovation, which spotlighted new products and tools for the developer community. And the Developer Zone offers new documentation, tools, containers, live training and forums to help developers tap into the power of Intel’s silicon.

Intel is striving to make these efforts open-source and easy-to-use. Our goal is to equip developers with open, simplified, unified and performant tools, so they can tap into the latest hardware capabilities across architectures and reduce programming costs and complexity.

Silicon & Software for the Future the PC

Looking ahead, Intel aims to empower those pushing the boundaries of the PC. These are experts like developers working on cloud-native applications, AI and machine-learning data scientists, the gaming and graphics community and leaders on 5G and the edge; all working to reimagine what’s possible on your laptop and how those experiences are delivered.

“The PC experiences of the future will render very differently and look a lot more like a blend of what we know across our phone, TV and PC platforms,” says Evers. “Just consider that people already spend the majority of their time on the PC in the browser. We want to create the solutions that help developers build that future.”

Intel is now focused on advancing the next phase of the developer-first strategy. This includes a number of initiatives, such as strategic partnerships with leading companies, a best-in-class developer cloud, a unified, scalable software repository and greater community outreach. Over time, these will knit together into one cohesive developer experience—paving the way for deeper engagement.

Shaping the Next Chapter with Developers

All of this is in the service of better, faster, easier experiences that meet people’s everyday needs. Shaping that future requires the best of software and hardware, working together based on a shared understanding of what people want from their PC.

Evers says it comes back to “the amazing magic between the products we create and the experiences we render. Time and again, I’ve seen the incredible ability of developers to innovate. They are the unsung heroes of the PC ecosystem.”

Intel aims to execute a proven playbook: meet developers where they are, understand their needs and work together to build something amazing.
