Consolidating Network Fabrics at Yahoo! Verifying the Viability of Moving Storage Applications from Fibre Channel to 10 Gigabit Ethernet Network engineers at Yahoo! performed a successful proof-of- concept study operating large- scale storage applications using Fibre Channel over Ethernet on Intel® Ethernet 10 Gigabit Server Adapters. Their findings suggest that Ethe...rnet-based unified data centers can support these applications with higher peak performance than native Fibre Channel and the reliability they require. These findings pave the way for potential cost savings from migrating some storage applications from Fibre Channel to 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Yahoo! maintains very large data warehouses and data marts, some of which are up to a petabyte in size. These data stores represent major assets for the company, but are also a major operational expense. As the company continues to evaluate technologies that can help decrease these costs, moving storage traffic from Fibre Channel to more cost- effective 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) is of particular interest. To determine whether migration to 10GbE is feasible, Yahoo! undertook the proof -of-concept (PoC) study described in this paper. Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), which encapsulates Fibre Channel packets inside Ethernet frames, was the primary enabling technology being investigated. The team had two primary goals for this study: •Performance. Determine whether FCoE can match the throughput available from native Fibre Channel. • Reliability. Gauge the ability of Intel® Ethernet 10 Gigabit Server Adapters to meet the stringent reliability requirements that storage networking imposes. Background: The Shift to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Unified Networking Data-intensive applications and growing data stores are placing greater demands on LAN and SAN resources. IT organizations are working to expand network capabilities to meet these needs, while also reducing costs, and this has led to strong growth in 10GbE deployments. Converging the traffic of multiple Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports onto a single 10GbE port delivers more bandwidth capacity to servers and greatly simplifies network infrastructures; even greater consolidation can be achieved by converging SAN traffic onto the 10GbE fabric. A unified network requires less equipment, including network adapters, switch ports, and cabling, making it easier to maintain and providing capital expense and energy cost savings. FCoE facilitates unified networking by encapsulating Fibre Channel traffic inside standard Ethernet frames, as shown in Figure 1. The overhead associated with the Ethernet encapsulation of Fibre Channel data structures is minor, at approximately 4 percent. Taking advantage of Data Center Bridging mechanisms that enable lossless transmission, FCoE makes Ethernet a suitable fabric for SAN traffic.
